Why Aren’t You Listening could be a lost Soundgarden classic, Ride Or Die might just be 2019’s biggest power ballad, and Bullseye steers a perilous course between NRA endorsement and Bon Jovi-style stadium singalong. Was the band really back? Yet across the album’s five instrumentals he binds everything together by allowing multiple themes to develop in parallel. This is shiny modern rock with a scuffed heart and a sense of constant restlessness of spirit. But for us — and for the purposes of this list — it means one thing: Guitars. The marquee names make their money out on the road, with a single night's gate receipts supplying a band like Metallica with the kind of income a successful album might take months to generate. Praise indeed. The songs breathe magnificently with equal parts wonder and dread, but the fireworks are in Lenker's love for humanity and inexhaustible curiosity. Who wants to pogo? At the same time, it'd be easy to label the Nigerian artist Mdou Moctar as "world" or global music, but his incredible album Ilana (The Creator) is a brick house of glorious, gritty guitar noise (and on this list). But that's always been American Football's M.O., from the drumstick count-off of "Never Meant" to a reunion that keeps on giving and growing: thoughtfully thumb a nose at rock pretense, slip into a minor key, let the tattered notebook pages bleed. Back in the saddle as bandleader, Steve Van Zandt's tangible labour of love defiantly captures old-school New York’s cross-pollinating melting pot with rich infusions of Latin (Party Mambo), blues (I Visit The Blues), blaxploitation (Vortex), classic rock’n’roll (Superfly Terra Plane), Southside Johnny And The Asbury Jukes (Soul Power Twistin’) and still making a social point on Education. On her third album as Jay Som, Melina Duterte packages her warm, tender sound into 9 songs — 34 minutes spent languishing in the non-specific memories that nostalgia often brings. Switching labels from Ninja Tune to BMG, this fifth album could be their breakthrough. Contributions by Rabab Al-Sharif, Chad Childers, Joe DiVita, Graham Hartmann, Steven Loftin, Jake Richardson, Lauryn Schaffner, The 66 Best Rock Albums of the Decade: 2010 - 2019, Zack de la Rocha + Josh Homme Perform Live With Run the Jewels. England and Wales company registration number 2008885. A Distant Call refines the Philly band's roots — Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Blue Öyster Cult, Cheap Trick — with a bottomless well of hot licks and ripping guitar solos, brawny call-and-response and Tina Halladay's soul-cleansing howl. Charly Bliss is still a rock band (see "Under You"), but lowering the bpm offered more access to the songwriter who dropped my most-quoted lyric of the decade ("I cry all the time, I think that it's cool"). But the LA group's fourth full-length is a deeply emotional and at times devastating self-examination of frontwoman Clementine Creevy's troubled inner life. —Lars Gotrich, Phoebe Bridgers has only been releasing albums for two years, but you wouldn't believe that looking at her discography. Being bummed out never sounded so fun. It's a feat to reignite an old flame after 15 years; it's another thing altogether to make it burn brighter than ever. But The Center Won't Hold is profoundly arresting, a refreshing surprise and a testament to just how remarkable and vital the band remains. The band's third eponymous album (and second since reuniting in 2014) is impressionistic in its quietly bursting arrangements and attuned to the individual talents of its vocal guests (Land of Talk's Elizabeth Powell, Slowdive's Rachel Goswell and a stunning duet with Paramore's Hayley Williams). —Lyndsey McKenna, Five years since the lower-than-lo-fi underground hit "What You Want" shook some action on the dance floor, Sheer Mag has toured like maniacs, upgraded to well-respected studio engineers like Arthur Rizk and become the denim-and-leather-jacket-wearing standard bearers of truly independent rock and roll. So we asked you to choose your favourite albums of 2019 so far, the results are in, and we're delighted to see plenty of new music amongst some very familiar names. Building impressively on 2017’s Witchbanger, the precision of Duel’s brutal occult boogie is immediately apparent on opener Black Magic Summer, Red Moon Forming and Tyrant On The Throne – tight and trippy powerhouses led firmly from the front by Tom Frank’s gravelly roar, his vocal style not dissimilar to Clutch’s Neil Fallon. Leaning into its signature sound, but adding unexpected textures here and there, Sheer Mag's worker anthems and brokenhearted rock ballads fist-pump just as hard, but maybe a little more tender. Same with Angel Olsen's All Mirrors or Brittany Howard's Jaime, two more albums we loved this year. So without further adieu, take a note from Black Keys' album title — let's rock. Given how closely associated its protagonists are to their respective genres, it’s no small achievement that The Damned Things don’t sound like any of the bands that spawned them. On the album centerpiece, "Not," Lenker breathlessly unspools a litany of dead ends in the search for meaning or existential understanding. Since forming in the West Country in the mid-noughties, The Heavy’s rock‘n’soul has conquered festivals and top US TV shows and sold out their spring European tour. (Honestly, we're not sure what you'd call them.) "Rock is dead!" Big, loud, fuzzy guitars. It’s a bonus that this unashamed celebration of endangered music and city life also makes a great party soundtrack. Only thundering heavy hitter Like A Lover trades pace for added intensity, otherwise Blunt Force Trauma, Under Cover, the extra-sweary Fortune Favors and Can’t Fight The Disco (natch) rock stupidly hard and addictively fast.
